Following the recent sad death of local man John Brown who brought the Bike Aid event to the area in the 1990's the hard working charity fundraising team that organise Burbage Carnival and fireworks night, were inundated with requests from members of the public to see the event return in the hope that many thousands of pounds can be raised for charity plus provide a really fun family day.

At a recent meeting chairman Mr Harvey Brown spoke about the large number of requests that had been made to the group, and discussed a possible re-instatement of the much loved event. There were concerns about overstretching the already busy committee, by adding a further event to the calendar.

Leicestershire County Council has decided to suspend one if its councillors after he was found to be in breach of the members' Code of Conduct.

 

The Standards (Hearing) Subcommittee agreed yesterday that Mr Geraint Jones had breached three sections of the Code when, at the scene of roadworks near his home on 22 October 2009, he behaved in a manner that was aggressive and rude, swore at a County Council employee who was on traffic management duties and threatened him by saying he was in a position to get him sacked.

Parents are being urged to look out for school place application packs which will be landing on doormats across Leicestershire in early September.

Around 14,000 forms will be sent out to parents whose children will transfer schools in the autumn term, 2011 and the County Council is urging them to make sure they apply on time.

All 54 libraries across Leicestershire are now Multi Access Centres (MACS) – a new service offering help and advice to people who are aged 19 or above who are out of work, or likely to be made redundant.

Leicestershire County Councillor Ernie White will kick off his adventure, which he hopes to complete in 11 days, from Bosworth Battlefield on September 4 to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Starting with a colourful street parade at 10.30am, this traditional community fete is being organised by Leicestershire County Council, and this will be the third year it has been re-created since the original event ceased in the 1980s.

More than 13,000 children in Leicestershire signed up to take part in Space Hop, this year’s national Summer Reading Challenge, through their local library, but even more are being urged to take part.

 

Children aged between four and twelve were challenged to read six books during the summer holidays by Leicestershire County Council's libraries, and many have already done so.
