Spring had finally arrived for the 3rd round of the Hinckley CRC Tuesday Night 10 Series. The icy winds and driving rain of the previous 2 weeks had relented and a mild sunny evening greeted the 41 riders.
This seasons new riders all improved in the better conditions, with Dave Evans dipping under the half-hour for the first time with a 29:38 and Lewis McLaren also knocking nearly 3 minutes of his previous best to finish in 30:15. The other new members: Neil Dixon (27:41) , Richard Gamble (27:18), James Cooper (27:50) and Scott Chaplin (25:30) all setting new PBs. Making a welcome return to competition after a dose of pneumonia and a stay in hospital was Ralf Richardson. Equipped with an old-skool red cap and his winter training bike ( complete with mudguards and pump ) Richardson managed 26:52. A long way from his best, but well on the way back to race pace. Welcome back Ralf! Quickly heading toward the top 10, Marc Lee improved again and beat the 25 minute barrier for the first time to finish 12th with 24:37. At the top of the table, this was the first time that all the 5-star favorites had gone head-to-head. Joules Reeds strong start to the season continued with a new course PB of 22:37 to finish 4th. Scott Walker ( 22:24, 3rd) and Bill Harris ( 22:50, 5th) also returned solid times, and Joe Murray showed he is getting back into form finishing 2nd in 22:21. But at the top of the Leader Board once again was Ian Ball. Ball’s amazing ride of 21:38 was just 19 seconds shy of Harris’s course record, quite an achievement this early in the season. After only 3 rounds we can see this is going to be one of the closest 5-Star competitions for years and it will not be long before we see a “20” on the K41/10.
