One small win for Hinckley, one giant leap to survival. Hinckley United recorded their 6th game without defeat as they came from behind at the Marston's Stadium to beat Hyde United 2-1.
It was by no means a classic game and a downpoor shortly before kick off made the pitch quite heavy going. Even so, Hinckley started the game the brighter, but didn't make good use of their chances, and it was a bit of a surprise when only seconds before the half time whistle Hinckley's defence completely disappeared and Hyde's Matt Tipton ran straight through the middle of it chipping over the stranded Michael Jones giving Hyde a 0-1 half time lead. Hinckley were level within 10 minutes of the second half starting. Leigh Platnauer put a free kick in from the left to the far right post for Richard Lavery, completely unmarked, to head past Craig Dootson to equalise the scores. The game got bogged down in midfield again after this, and chances were few. As the match headed for a draw it sparked into life for the final 10 minutes. Hinckley took the lead from a corner on the right, crossed to the far left, and again to an unmarked defender on the back post. This time Tom Birch popped up to power his header down and past Dootson, the young defender celebrating wildly in front of the home fans. With Hyde pushing in the closing stages for an equaliser, Michael Jones pulled off a great reaction save denying Hyde at close range, with the defence clearing the ball from danger. Hinckley held on for the 3 minutes of injury time and secured a vital three points that lifted the club back out of the relegation zone. Hinckley play their game in hand at home to Tamworth on Monday night and then travel to Vauxhall Motors next Saturday. Vauxhall were confirmed as relegated on Saturday when they were beaten by Stalybridge, who themselves confirmed their play off place with that win.
