Young people in Burbage are being recruited to help clean up their local park on Saturday February 9.
The litter pick is being held at Rugby Road Recreation Ground, Burbage and residents are asked to get there for 10am. The event has been organised by the Youth Development Working Party of Burbage Parish Council and the police will be on hand to help with the litter-picking. PC Lesley Clarke, beat officer for Burbage, said: "We really hope young members of the community will come along to help us clean up and improve the park. It will give them a chance to say this is our park and we want it tidy. "We will also have the rural beat vehicle on site with officers from the Burbage beat team who will be available from 10am until 3pm. The event coincides with the completion of a youth shelter behind the Brookside shops close to the recreation ground, where young people can meet up in an area they find comfortable. The shelter gives them the chance to hang out at their own spot, and gives them somewhere to call their own. Ian Coe, chairman of the Burbage council and leader of its youth development team, said: "The whole thing is about allowing young people to show that they are willing to take on responsibilities and follow their interests in a way that won't cause problems for others. "We know there are lots of youngsters in Burbage willing to prove that their generation isn't as uncaring as it's made out to be."
Litter-grabbers, gloves and rubbish sacks will be provided in the supervised session, which starts at 11.00am. The 637 Bus operated by Next Generation will be on the site, to offer young people a chance to get involved in various activities and to find out what they want in the area.
The police beat bus will also be parked near to the Tilton Road / Boyslade Rd, shops on Friday February 8 betwee 9am and 12pm.
