A campaign to save cash and protect the planet is being backed by Leicestershire County Council.
February 27 is E-Day, when people are urged to switch off electrical items that they are not using, such as TVs and microwaves on standby. The idea is that, by reducing the amount of electricity and gas we use, we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that goes into the atmosphere and slow down the rate of global warming. Now, the County Council is encouraging people to do their bit, by giving away low-energy light bulbs at its libraries and museums. You will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire about energy use in your home. Ernie White, Cabinet member for environmental issues, said: “If each household in Leicestershire replaced one light bulb with a low energy version, they would each save £9 per year and the county would produce 15,500 tonnes less carbon dioxide.” The Council has also launched a “good housekeeping” energy campaign, to reduce energy use in its buildings by 10 per cent.
