Residents of a Leicestershire village have recently had the chance to hear about plans for affordable housing.
People in Sapcote were invited by their Parish Council to a drop in session to see the plans and give their views on a scheme of up to twelve homes on Sharnford Road in the village.
The event was arranged following a local housing needs survey organised by the Richard Windley, Leicestershire Rural Housing Enabler, and the Parish Council which highlighted the need for more affordable homes.
Over 130 people attended and 84 said they were in favour of the development with comments ranging from, “an excellent idea”, “good location”, “an asset to the village”, to “it will keep young people and young families in the village” and “this small development will not impact too much on loss of agricultural land”.
Keith Gibson, Chairman of Sapcote Parish Council, said: ”Residents of these affordable homes, whether tenants or shared-ownership purchasers, would have a link to the village in so far as they already live in, work in, have close relatives in or used to live in the parish. Planning permission should not be granted unless the Housing Association agrees to these rules.”
Lesley Pendleton, Chairman of the Leicestershire Rural Partnership and Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, said: “It’s encouraging to see that the people of Sapcote are behind this scheme. Can I take this opportunity to assure them that these homes would be designed to fit in with the local character of the village and be genuinely affordable.”
The County Council-led Leicestershire Rural Partnership supports the work of Richard Windley. Richard works proactively with Parish and District Councils across the County, including, in this case Sapcote Parish and Blaby District Councils, to identify the need for affordable housing in rural communities.
